About BangoSangho
An Endeavor To Bring Us Together!
The
Bengali Association of Dar-Es-Salaam, BangoSangho is a non profit
organization based in Tanzania, East Africa.
The saga of BangoSangho does not end unless we look back at the days of its
inception and express our gratitude to our veterans like Dr. D.K Sengupta,
Dr. Dastidar and many others who took the effort to transform an informal
group of genetically compelled chat lovers to a full fledged Association of
BangoSangho.
This event traces back to the mid 70’s (Nov 1975) when 35 Bengali families
based on this far off land took the initiative to form an association, which
they endearingly called "BangoSangho".
Since its inception it has been promoting Bengali culture and heritage
through hosting different cultural and social events throughout the Bengali
calendar year. Durgapuja, Saraswati Puja, Poila Baishakh to name a few.
Adding more on the glorious part of BangoSangho, Dr. Sengupta cherishes the
moments of close bonding between members, periodical sports events like
football matches, card playing competitions followed by a brief cultural
programme.
Treading down memory lane, he recollects an interesting week end rendezvous
which used to take place at the "Drive In", where there existed a car park
capacity of 600 cars; now that’s news to us! Specially when we compare the
jostling experience of car park everywhere now a days.
Reminiscing the golden olden days, he says, the city was much safer and
expatriates were among the most respectable ones in the society. Well all
was not hunky dory about former BangoSangho. They had their own share of
sorrows. Due the financial recession (in the early 80’s), the number of
Bengali families reduced to 12-13.
But the shrinking number of families could not take the zest out of the
remaining members, and Durga Puja continued with the same spirit.
So here we go!!
